Naturopathic Medicine

photo for naturopathic medicineHealing the body naturally.

Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) relieve their patients' suffering by relying on and supporting the patient's own ability to heal. Naturopathy is focused on patient education, and NDs teach their patients to strengthen and enhance their bodies' abilities with a sensible combination of diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting edge natural therapies.

According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AAND), "Naturopathic physicians craft comprehensive treatment plans that blend the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to not only treat disease, but to also restore health."

Program Description

BMC offers courses that cover the first 2 years of a typical 4-year college pre-naturopathic medicine program (college-level courses) as well as courses to develop skills needed for college-level courses.

Once you transfer to a 4-year school and complete your bachelor's degree, you can apply to the Bastyr University Naturopathic Medicine Program.

Although it is not required, most students admitted to the Bastyr University Naturopathic Medicine Program have completed a bachelor's degree. The program does not give preference to any particular majors; therefore, it is not necessary to major in a science area. Rather, the major should be chosen to provide a career in the event the student is not admitted to the naturopathic medicine program.

Degree Options: Associate in Arts and Sciences Degree (Option B)

Program Planning

High School Preparation: While in high school, students should pursue all the available courses in mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics.

Students should gain exposure to the naturopathic medical profession by observing, assisting, and gaining work experience in offices, clinics, hospitals, and research facilities, and by exploring the medical literature.

Recommended Class Schedule: We suggest the following schedule of classes for students who wish to earn the Associate Degree in Arts and Sciences at BMC. This degree is quite flexible, and some substitutions can be made - providing that the course of studies is in agreement for the Arts and Sciences Option B Degree.
