Why do people do and say the things they do? Are human beings driven by emotion or rational thought? The study of psychology tries to find the answers to these and myriad other questions about the way humans live, relate, and react in our world.

BMC's psychology courses will give you a solid introduction to the concepts, terminology, and current advances in this fascinating field. As you prepare for transfer to a 4-year university, our psychology courses will help you reach your academic and career goals in psychology and the social sciences.

Program Planning

Recommended Class Schedule: We suggest the following schedule of classes for students who wish to major in psychology and earn the Associate Degree in Arts & Sciences (college transfer). Substitutions may be made for any of these courses, except for those in bold, provided the degree plan is followed for the Arts & Sciences Option A Degree. Such students should also contact the psychology department of their intended transfer institution in order to learn of any special course preferences or requirements which that college may have.

  • BMC requires one of the following math courses: &147, &148, (&141 and &142 as a sequence) &151, &152, &153. Both campuses require Statistics (MATH 146) for the bachelor's degree, and it can be taken at BMC However, BMC will not let you declare a psychology major until you have successfully completed Statistics, so we recommend taking it before transfer
  • Some courses have prerequisites
  • The humanities and social science distribution courses must be chosen from the humanities and social science sections of the Approved Distribution Course List.
  • BMC does not require PSYC 202 for their psychology major, but we recommend it anyway, as they do not offer any biopsychology classes. PSYC 209 is required, though you may take it at BMC
  • PSYC 209 is a writing intensive course. BMC requires two in the major and PSYC 209 is one of them. The other is a lab class that you take your junior or senior year.
  • BMC has a language requirement , which is "Foreign Language through 3rd quarter, three years of high school, placement by exam out of the first-year level, or native speaker status. (minimum grade C or 2.0 for 3rd quarter class)."
  • ANTH &237 AND 245 are good substitutions, as they also meet the natural sciences distribution requirement.
